Nurturing Dreams Beyond the Field: The Crucial Need for Ongoing Support for Academy Players

Introduction:

For young soccer enthusiasts like Alfie Cain, the opportunity to play for a premier club's academy is a dream realized at an early age.

However, as Alfie's story illustrates, the journey from academy to professional football isn't always straightforward.

The transition can be especially challenging for the multitude of aspiring players who, despite their talent and dedication, find themselves released by clubs.

In this blog post, we'll delve into the importance of comprehensive support for soccer academy players, both during their training period and following the completion of training, particularly if they face the heart-wrenching scenario of being released, and the role that the people closest to them (parents and relatives) can play towards supporting a player's development..

The Dream and the Reality:

At the tender age of eight, Alfie Cain's dream came true when he joined Chelsea's academy, only to be later released by Chelsea and subsequently by his next club, Barnet, leading to an early exit from professional football at 18.

Unfortunately, Alfie's story is not unique, with approximately 1.5 million players engaged in organized youth football in England, but only a fraction making it to the pinnacle as Premier League professionals.

Education as a Pillar of Support:

Alfie emphasizes the importance of education as a key component of support for academy players.

While with the academy, he pursued a qualification in sports science, a subject he had "no interest in." His insight calls attention to the need for academies to offer a broader range of subjects, allowing players to explore and prepare for life beyond football just in case they do not receive the offer of a professional contract.

By providing a diverse curriculum, academies can empower players to pursue subjects they are passionate about, reducing the risk of leaving them feeling completely saddened by a decision not to offer them a contract.

Ongoing Support for Released Players:

One of the critical aspects highlighted by Alfie is the lack of support for players once they are released.

The abrupt nature of the departure, without any follow-up or assistance, can be emotionally and mentally devastating. Alfie's experience echoes the feeling that more detailed and thoughtful approach is needed.

He believes clubs could take responsibility for supporting players who have been released, in terms of career counseling, mental health resources, and mentorship programs.

Receiving Support From Parents / Relatives

Alfie's experience is just one of many young players who are released by an academy which highlights how parents / relatives of a player can play an important role towards supporting the development of a player.

That support can be in the form of financial, logistical or even emotional support, or a more fulltime type of support to help a player on his / her career development journey.

For example, a parent or relative of a player can  consider becoming the player's personal agent. There are many examples of top players who have or are being, represented by a parent or relative. These are some examples:

Experienced Players

Lionel Messi - Jorge - Father and Agent

Neymar Jr - Neymar - Father and Agent

Kylian Mbappe - Wilfried - Father and Agent

Eden Hazard - Thierry - Father and Agent

Ilkay Gundogan - Ilhan - Uncle and former agent

Youth Players

Arda Guler - Guler's Father is his Agent

Jude Bellingham - Mark - Father and Agent

This proves that parents and relatives can support a player to succeed as a professional footballer.

By helping a player throughout their journey, even if they do not succeed in becoming a professional player, they can be better prepared for a life beyond the field.
